Enthusiastic about technological progress, Frederick William IV, King of Prussia, had a railway station built close to his residence Augustusburg in 1844, thus creating the basis for the rapid industrial and cultural evolution of Brühl, the town of gardens and castles.

Urban history - Time Travel to the Past

It is definitely the citizens of Cologne who are to blame. Had these self-confident people not given their Archbishop Siegfried von Westerburg such a hard time in the 13th century and prompted him to flee to nearby "broglio", Brühl would have hardly been awarded its town charter in 1285.

Museums

The newly opened Max Ernst Museum tells us about someone who went forth to flutter the dovecotes. The museum, dedicated to the renowned painter, graphic artist, sculptor and poet Max Ernst who was born in Brühl in 1891, opened its doors recently no more than a few steps away from Schloss Augustusburg. For the first time ever, a complete survey of his multi-faceted oeuvre is presented IN one place, tracing back the life of this ingenious 20th century artist.

Will Küpper

The "Will Küpper-Archive" presents a collection of over 100 oil-paintings and over 1000 drawings, made by the 20th century artist and friend of Max Ernst, Will Küpper. Already at an early stage, the human being had become the central theme of Küpper's artistic creativity. Around the middle of the nineteen-twenties Küpper's works developed from expressionism to the neo-realism.

The life-size figures made of clay

They appear to grow out of the ground and reach out towards the sky. The life-size figures made of clay by the artist Richard Bausewein are silent visitors, who seem to be complacently observing the activities in the patio of the "Bundesfinanzakademie". Grooves, fractures and cracks mark the surfaces of the torsi and half-figures and give the human bodies their characteristic features. [www.bundesfinanzakademie.de]
