In 1984, UNESCO included the palaces Augustusburg, Falkenlust and the gardens in its list of world heritage. Augustusburg, the favourite residence of Clemens August von Wittelsbach, archbishop and prince-elector of Cologne, was created in 1725 by Johann Conrad Schlaun and was transformed into a magnificent palace between 1728 and 1768. Between 1729 and 1737 the hunting lodge Falkenlust was created according to the plans of Cuvilliés.
